Mercer has been aware of the ancients for quite some time and aware of the fact that he was, very likely, a shard of one of them. That said, he didn't know any details about his own soul until rather recently when he met someone familiar with the ancient he had once been.

He still doesn't know much. Just a name, really. Prometheus.

Mercer doesn't really want to know more than that as he does not feel any particular connection to the ancients. He feels that this is his life and his soul and they are long gone. It is his time to live and their time to rest.

He hasn't met any of his reflections, either. Though, I do have plans to change that when I come back from my hiatus. Perhaps that will be the catalyst for gim learning more about Prometheus. We will have to wait and see.

the reason critical role is so good is because every campaign features at least one cast member creating a character that they intend to be doomed by the narrative and matt and the rest of the cast going don’t be an idiot, Our Love Will Undoom Them. like in the explanation of percy’s final playlist, taliesin wrote, “Cheers to a happy ending for a character intended by his creator to be karmically irredeemable. May we all be so fortunate.” and just, Yeah.

idk if you saw Omar in his little battle armor on the TLVOM watch party but I feel like that could make an excellent doodle. maybe he needs a sword, too!

So I did see Omar's battle armor and it was very cute, but in my laziness looking up a reference from the party, I instead spent several hours painting him as Brennan Lee Mulligan's knight photoshoot, inspired by your suggestion of adding a sword 😂

Mercer’s echo manifested at both the best and the worst possible time... when he was standing on the battlefield opposite Ifrit.  This was handy because it meant that he could not be tempered. Something that was far more dire at the time as this predated reversing tempering. It was less than great because he suddenly became very disoriented. Trying to push past the words “Hear, Feel, Think...” was particularly difficult, but he did manage it. 

There were no other signs that he had the echo in that moment. None at all. In fact, most of his friends just assumed he was lucky to have not been tempered, or were so distracted by his other injuries that it slipped their minds. (This is also when he lost his leg, you see.) It wasn’t until a fortnight or so later when his friend Ayame reached out to put her prosthetic hand on his shoulder to comfort him that his echo first activated. 

His echo is nonstandard and so he doesn’t usually have visions. The simplest way to describe it is that it allows him to talk to machines. If I am being more specific, physical contact with a machine allows him to interface with the core and translates the code allowing him to understand and identify core processes as well as any defects. 

The issue with the first activation of his echo came in the second little interesting bit about his echo. When machines “talk” they often tend to take on the voice of their primary user or their maker, depending on how often they have been used. Basically the more spirit bond you have with an item the more likely it is to take on certain qualities of you. Ayame’s prosthetic arms saw quite a lot of use, obviously, and were spirit bound to her. And as such the imprint she had made on them was particularly strong. Meaning that they “spoke” in her voice and when they explained their processes and purpose they did it in way that she would. Which included descriptions of death and murder as Ayame was a skilled assassin. 

Mercer had no idea where the voice in his head describing death was coming from and thought he was going absolutely insane. It wasn’t until he was assisting his teacher, Sari, in her workshop that she realized what was going on. 

To this day he won’t touch Ayame’s prosthetics if he can, at all, avoid it. They are going to forever creep him out.

So, there you have it. The short story of how Mercer’s echo activated and the sort of long explanation of how it works. :D

I do keep coming back to the thought that there is no reason to have stopped to see Astrid before going to Aeor if the point wasn't to try to recruit her for chaperone duties. It doesn't exactly seem like she's with the Vanguard or she wouldn't be hiding in a smut shop in Zadash.

Please, Astrid, come to Aeor with us. You can take potshots at your ex's new boyfriend the whole time. And he can't even say shit about it, because he's the one who invited you.
